While it’s true that most of the conversation about literacy practices these days seems to focus on the earliest grades, there is plenty of confusion and uncertainty about literacy instruction for older students, too.
In Shifting the Balance: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Balanced Literacy Classroom, we offered an invitation to literacy educators looking for a way to embrace both science and balance to support readers so they can get off to a strong start.
And now, in Shifting the Balance: 6 Ways to Bring the Science of Reading into the Upper Elementary Classroom, we offer six NEXT shifts for anyone who works with students who have moved past the “beginning to read” phase. These shifts are for teachers who want to help developing readers learn to read with increasing accuracy, automaticity, purpose, and joy.
So, today we are excited to share–along with co-author Katie Egan Cunningham–that Stenhouse has released the first episode in our new podcast series about the new book. The podcast is an easy way for the three of us to share with busy educators like you a bit of the story behind the 3-5 book while also giving you a taste of each of the NEXT 6 shifts!
You can pair these short and to-the-point recordings with a book study, share them with colleagues, or listen while you drive/bike/do laundry/cook dinner/etc.
So, if you haven’t already, be sure to subscribe to “The Six Shifts” wherever you listen to podcasts so you don’t miss an episode–there are six more in the queue.
And if you want even more practical guidance on how to make learning to read more brain-friendly for your students (and easier for you), we invite you to join us in either of our Shifting the Balance: The Online Classes, beginning September 11th!
Happy listening!!
