How to Use the Morphology Lesson Template
The most frequent question we get from teachers about Morphology Instruction is, “Which morphemes should I teach and in what order?” While there are many possible answers and no definitive right or wrong choice, it’s important not to let indecision hold you back from starting your morphology instruction.
Five-Step Process for Teaching Morphology

Identify the Morpheme
Share the morpheme’s meaning and its placement in words (prefix, suffix, or root). -
Provide Examples
Offer examples of words containing the morpheme and state their meaning (pre + cook = cook before). -
Offer Non-Examples
If applicable, offer non-examples (pre- is not a prefix in press or preacher). -
Student Practice
Have students use the new morpheme to build words by combining affixes and bases from a list. -
Cloze Sentences
Students fill in cloze sentences with words from the lesson.
